Fibromyalgia News Update
Most of the chronic health challenges we see today such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, digestive disturbances, and coronary artery disease are associated with exposure to toxins. Environmental chemicals, pesticides, plastics, and processed foods are some of the toxins that constantly bombard our bodies. If we do not find a way to detoxify some of these chemicals and pollutants we will become more prone to chronic disease.
On a regular basis we change the oil our cars and clean air filters in our furnace, since we know they will run more efficiently when they are clean. We also brush our teeth and take a shower daily so that the outside of our body gets clean. The inside of our body also needs to be clean. What we eat, drink and breathe on a daily basis affects our internal organs. When we take in too many toxins, our liver has problems processing them, and soon we can have a variety of symptoms.
Here is a list of Common Symptoms of Chemicals and Toxins in the System:
1. Headaches
2. Skin Problems
3. Bad breath
4. Body odor
5. Blood sugar imbalances
6. Depression
7. Mental dullness / poor memory
8. Chronic fatigue
9. Multiple chemical sensitivities
10. Poor digestion
11. Weight gain
12. Water retention
13. Premature aging and wrinkling
14. Muscle and/or joint pain
15. Unusual responses to medication and supplements
16. Insomnia
17. Hair falling out
18. Age spots
If you have any of the above symptoms on a regular basis, consider doing a detoxification program. Even though we take good supplements or try to eat a good diet daily, if toxins are in our system and cannot get removed effectively, many of the symptoms will become chronic.
The liver is our major detoxification organ. It has a two-phase toxin removal system. In Phase I, the liver works with the intestines to help transform fat-soluble toxins into molecules that are ready to be removed from the system. In Phase II the liver attaches the toxin to a water-soluble molecule so that it can quickly be eliminated through the kidneys. This removal of the new water-soluble molecule should happen as soon as possible so that the toxins are not stored too long.
During a detoxification program it is very important to get high quality nutrition daily in an easy to absorb form. To maintain a healthy metabolism and avoid muscle wasting during detoxification, a program that incorporates bioavailable proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fiber are necessary. High quality proteins that contain the amino acids methionine and cysteine help reduce excessive fatty build-up in the liver, and support liver phase II detoxification. High quality detoxification supplements contain this lipotrophic blend of amino acids that are specifically designed to help in liver cleansing.
Elimination of toxins in our environment is very important so that our body does not absorb them in the first place. Over time toxins will build up even when we try to avoid them. So as we clean our filters in our air vents so that the air we breathe is healthy, we will need to do a regular detoxification program. Depending on your symptoms, anywhere from twice a year to once a month is necessary to get the system cleansed.
Book or Magazine of the Month
If you have not read my book "Natural Choices for Fibromyalgia", please order it today! Many positive reviews have come from people with fibromyalgia who have enjoyed the book. Most reader like the straightforward approach the book takes to providing clues of what may have caused their fibromyalgia symptoms and what they can do about it.
I have become a recent subscriber to the magazine called Fibromyalgia Aware. The National Fibromyalgia Association publishes this magazine. Their website is www.fmaware.org I was made aware of this organization when I traveled to southern California last spring and I have signed up for their newsletters since then.
Supplement of the Month - EPA-DHA Complex
Along with a detoxification program it is VERY important to take essential fatty acids. When the body is cleansing you want to make sure any toxins have easy transport out of your system. So I recommend everyone to supplement their nutritional program to include essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are so called because they are essential to human health but cannot be made by the body, so they must be provided from our food. There are a number of them that are available on the web-site.
EPA-DHA Complex contains fish oil in the form of EPA and DHA. EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), is important for reducing inflammation in the body and helping to improve cell membrane flexibility. It will help maintain the strength of the cell while improving the flow of nutrients in to and out of the cell. This will help all of your nutrition from diet or supplementation get absorbed into your cells more efficiently. EPA helps our body make prostaglandins, which are substances that can influence the function of any cell. They affect the response of hormones and the level of inflammation in the body. An imbalance of prostaglandins can cause the hypersensitivity to pain found in fibromyalgia.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid component of the structural lipids of the brain and retina. It is the building block of the human brain tissue and the primary fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain. It is doubly important if you are a vegetarian to take DHA because it is practically non-existent in a vegetarian diet.
Deficiencies of EPA and DHA can contribute to severe bone loss and osteoporosis. Essential fatty acids have also been shown to enhance calcium absorption, increase calcium deposits in bones, diminish calcium loss in urine, improve bone strength, and enhance bone growth. So if you are taking calcium and still have problems with osteoporosis, either change the calcium you are taking if it does not correlate to your pH levels, or supplement with EPA DHA Complex.
